Robotically Bent Gabion
The project brings together the traditional method of wire work used to stabilize shorelines and advanced digital fabrication techniques of robotically controlled rod bending. The gabions are designed with a single geometry interlocked repeatedly to form multiple shapes that serve as the structural edges around which wire can be wound. The modular wire mesh gabions can be filled more or less densely as needed. This allows for varied penetrable conditions of light. This construction allows air movement through the building and creates an environment of moderate temperatures inside. This could be described as stone wickerwork with varying degrees of transparency, more like skin than like traditional masonry.
